ADB Talks Transportation

The Asian Development Bank held a workshop Thursday on how to improve the transportation sector by promoting private sector participation.

The workshop follows up on a study by the ADB on roads, electricity, water supply, airports, air traffic control and ports, said Anthony Judge, deputy head of the ADB mission in Cambodia.

Workshop participants were told that the government needs to establish a conducive environment for private sector participation, such as political stability, a stable exchange rate and a strong legal system.

Lou Kimchhun, director of the Sihanoukville port, said the workshop was valuable because the port is looking into partnering with a private company to manage the port. Sihanoukville port is the busiest in the country.

But before Sihanoukville Port Authority signs any deals, it wants to find ways to improve management of the port on its own, Lou Kimchhun said.

“We must find out the exact disease for our own self before we cooperate with a private company,” he said. “We need to understand what is wrong with us.”
