Hun Manet Says Cambodia’s Strength Lies in National Unity

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet says the country’s strength in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity depends on the spirit of national unity among its people.

Speaking on June 23 at the closing ceremony of the Central Committee meeting of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, Hun Manet stressed that national pride and patriotism are enduring values that unite Cambodians. He said these values are unshakable, even though Cambodia is a small country, and that only through unity can it withstand pressure or encroachment from neighboring nations.

The Prime Minister added that the government has not initiated a nationalist movement, but that the Cambodian people themselves are displaying patriotism as they stand in solidarity to defend their country’s independence and borders. He claimed that in the current geopolitical climate, Cambodians have shown an especially strong spirit of unity and national pride.

Hun Manet emphasized that as Cambodia faces growing pressure from neighboring countries, the public has rallied behind the government and the armed forces in protecting national sovereignty, territorial integrity and the nation’s honor.

However, opposition voices have challenged the government’s interpretation of unity. Um Sam An, a former lawmaker from the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party, told The Cambodia Daily that genuine national unity cannot be reduced to images of government supporters rallying around the border dispute with Thailand.

He argued that true strength comes from political reconciliation and internal cohesion, not from one-sided displays of support. Um Sam An called on the government to release all political prisoners and end what he described as politically motivated prosecutions. Without this, he said, national unity cannot be achieved.

He added that if Cambodia is to build lasting national cohesion and present a unified front, it must first ensure inclusive politics and genuine reconciliation. Otherwise, he warned, external powers may continue to disregard Cambodia’s position on issues of sovereignty.

Opposition members maintain that unless political discrimination ends and dissenting voices are allowed to participate freely, the claim of national unity remains incomplete.
