Police Arrest Man With Thousands in Fake US Bills

Police in Battambang province arrested a man on Saturday who was in possession of more than $2,500 in counterfeit U.S. notes after receiving complaints from market vendors he had duped earlier in the day, police said Sunday.

Ron Mosa, 43, used some of the fake bills to buy gasoline and food at a market in Kamrieng district and was handed back a substantial amount of change in genuine riel notes, according to deputy district police chief Chor Koeun.

He said the vendors later called police after growing suspicious about the dollar bills he had given them.

“He had counterfeit money in $5, $10, $20 and $100 notes. We confiscated a total of $2,560,” Mr. Koeun said, adding that the man would be sent to the provincial court on Monday.

District penal police chief Srey Vuthy said Mr. Mosa used the fake bills at four different locations around the market on Saturday and received a total of 200,000 riel (about $50) in change.

He said the man confessed to knowingly using the counterfeit cash and to doing so on prior occasions in the district.
