More than 100 homes in Kampot province were destroyed or damaged by heavy winds on Monday morning, local officials said. Ok Samnang, director of the province’s information department, said Tuesday that the winds destroyed or damaged 139 homes in Toek Chhou district, Prek Tnort commune, but injured no one.
“We always inform people who live near dangerous areas to be careful about storms, especially the fishermen who fish on the sea,” he said.
The provincial office of the Cambodian Red Cross has since provided families with tents, clean water, food and mats, he added. Keo Vy, cabinet chief for the National Committee for Disaster Management, said 160 storms have hit the country so far this year, killing 9 people, injuring 87, destroying 784 homes and damaging another 5,163.
“In the last two weeks, the storms have affected the southwest seashore of the country including Kampot and Preah Sihanouk provinces,” he said. Just last week, he added, storms injured 2 people and destroyed 15 houses in Preah Sihanouk province.
