Foreign Nationals Jailed For Stealing Cigarettes

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Thursday found two foreign nationals guilty of stealing cigarettes from Paragon Super Market.

The convicted men—U.S. national Jeffrey Alan Adams, 51, and Dutch national Johan Becker, 59—were sentenced to one year in prison each followed by deportation from the country.

“Dutchman Becker Johan is sentenced a year and deported from Cambodia; American Jeffrey Alan Adams is sentenced a year and deported from Cambodia,” said Judge Kim Rothnarin in court on Thursday.

The men also must pay $1,963 to cover the cost of the stolen cigarettes, plus 4 million riel (about $1,000) in compensation to the head of the market, Chan Sarun.

Police arrested Mr. Adams and Mr. Becker in March 2014 after a representative of Paragon Super Market, Sea Chantha, filed a complaint with police.

Security footage used as evidence in the case showed the two men stealing 170 cartons of different brands of cigarettes over a 10-day period from the supermarket in Daun Penh district’s Chey Chumneah commune.
