Police are investigating the rape and killing of a 27-year-old woman whose body was dumped in a canal in Kompong Cham province’s Stung Trang district, police said yesterday.
The father of Ya Tes Roas discovered the beaten body of his daughter in Dang Kdar commune Monday evening after she did not return home from work, said deputy district police chief Lim Heang.
“We assumed that the victim was raped and killed because she was naked. The victim had serious injuries on her face and eyes, and she was strangled to death,” Mr Heang said.
Mr Heang said investigating the crime could prove difficult since the father carried his daughter’s body back to his house before contacting police. “Because it was such a remote area and the father took the body from the scene to the house before informing police, we face difficulties in finding evidence and the perpetrator,” he said.
Lanh Satya, police chief of the provincial serious crimes department, said that a medical examination found that the victim was raped before she was killed.
However, Mr Satya said he was confident that police would catch Ya Tes Roas’ killer.
“Police now have a lot of clues to find a suspect,” Mr Satya said.
There have been three rape-murders in Kompong Cham this year, with no arrests made in connection with them, Mr Satya added.
In a separate case, Kompong Cham Provincial Court charged a 24-year-old man with the attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in Kompong Siem, according to a court official.
Chhan Boran was arrested Sunday at about 8 pm, an hour after the mother of the girl allegedly found the two of them under a tree in her yard in Kompong Siem district’s Ra Ang commune, according to provincial deputy prosecutor Phan Sopheak. Mr Sopheak said that Chhan Boran was being held after being charged with attempted rape.
“The mother saw her daughter naked and the suspect was still in his underwear and attempting to have sex with her,” Mr Satya said.
