Six people were killed and two were injured in three separate traffic accidents in Battambang province on Friday, officials said July 22.
A motorbike driver was critically injured in a head-on collision with a Daewoo Tico car in Mong Russei district at approximately 6:30 pm July 20, said Moek Heng, chief of the provincial police unit that resolves disputes over traffic accidents.
Two men were killed instantly a couple of hours later when their motorbike slammed into a truck carrying bricks that had broken down on the side of Route 5 in Thma Koul district’s O’Taki commune, Moek Heng said, adding that a 13-year-old, Reth Run, had been standing at the side of the road and had been injured in the accident.
The two men on the motorbike—Phim Visal, 39, and Kim Sareth, 62—had been drinking, said Nhiek Nhan, district traffic police chief.
A third accident occurred at 10:30 pm in Battambang town’s O’Char commune when a speeding white Toyota Camry swiped a motorbike carrying four construction workers, killing two of the motorbike passengers on the spot and fatally injuring the other two, who died later that evening in hospital, said Moek Heng.
The driver of the Camry sped off from the scene and has not been found, he said.
“This month is strange because there were many passengers who died in traffic accidents,” he said, adding that in Battambang town alone this month there have been 11 traffic fatalities and 20 people injured.
Moek Heng said that the main causes of traffic accidents are drunk driving, speeding and not using lights at night.
