Cambodian Skies May Soon Become Busier

A Thai airline has applied to begin offering domestic flights in Cambodia, while a largely domestic airline has expanded its international offerings.

Thai-based Phuket Air has applied to the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation to start up “Angkor Air” as a joint venture with Cambodian investors, but few details are now known and no permission has yet been granted, said Kao Sophal, a secretary of state for the secretariat.

Thong Khon, secretary of state for the Ministry of Tourism, said he believed that the new airline planned to offer flights between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Meanwhile, Indonesian-owned President Airlines announced that it will begin service today to Bangkok and later this month to Hong Kong. President has planned daily round-trip Phnom Penh-to-Bangkok flights, with the first one scheduled for today on a 168-seat Boeing plane, said Sok Teang, the airline’s reservation officer.

Phnom Penh-to-Hong Kong flights are scheduled to operate four times a week starting Oct 29. The airline launched its first international service in August with flights between Phnom Penh and Taipei, Taiwan.

“We are moving up from being a domestic to an international airline, so we have improved our service to provide international quality,” Sok Teang said.

President Airlines will continue its domestic service from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, Battambang and Ratanakkiri, she said.
