Tight-Skirted Stars Must Face Hun Sen

Prime Minister Hun Sen has had enough of television and concert performers wearing revealing clothing.

He now wants to have face-to-face meetings with any celebrities who continue to wear clothing that is too short, too tight or too revealing, the premier said Friday at the Council of Ministers’ meeting.

The meetings could include Minister of Culture Princess Norodom Bopha Devi and concerned companies as well, said Penn Thol, spokesman for the council.

“After [Hun Sen’s] advice not to dress too short, [performers] changed their dress to too tight,” Penn Thol said.

The skimpy outfits threaten traditional culture, Penn Thol said. He also criticized the performers’ “trembling” style of dancing.

Another member of the council, who asked not to be named, said high-heeled shoes were not appropriate either. “It is dangerous, and they look like they are wearing sticks,” the official said.

Hun Sen has repeatedly criticized the wardrobes of performers, and has asked television producers not to allow scantily clad stars. He has blamed Thai pop culture for the surge of titillating outfits.

No date has been set for the celebrity meetings, but Penn Thol said they would begin soon.
