About one-third of the 1,500 workers at the City New Garment Factory in Phnom Penh went on strike Tuesday, demanding a raise in their reduced salaries and better treatment of employees.
The factory has been forced to decrease pay for its workers because a drop in orders has cut production in half, officials said. Workers demanded that management pay at least 50 percent of their daily wages on days when there is no work, as the labor law states.
David Chong, the company’s main shareholder, said the factory is facing a difficult time.
“We receive only a few export orders so that our factory is just sewing clothes for other factories here,” Chong said. He said shareholders are discussing the issue and will respond by Monday.
