Students and teachers in a Kompong Thom province school continued their days-long protest Monday against what they allege was the wrongful arrest of a teacher, officials said.
Provincial deputy police chief Kim An said the Taing Krasaing school teacher was arrested on Friday in connection with a September dispute between the teacher and a vendor in the Taing Krasaing market.
The ongoing protests have prompted the Ministry of Education to request an inquiry by the Ministry of Justice, according to Pok Than, secretary of state for the Education Ministry.
“We should let the court solve this problem by state law,” Pok Than said, adding that the student protesters should cease immediately.
According to Kompong Thom Education Ministry officials, protesters refused to enter the school.
The students also hung placards that read, “Please help find justice” around the school walls.
Critics allege that the teacher, identified as Loh Daly, was arrested without a warrant from the prosecutor.
Kim An said the teacher originally was called in for questioning but he was put in jail without warning.
