The US petroleum giant Caltex, mobile phone company MobiTel and TV5 will sponsor a new football league slated to kick off on Saturday.
The 10-team Cambodia Football League will be the country’s second, along with the existing Marlboro League, Cambodian Football Federation President Sin Sok said Thursday.
Caltex is paying $70,000 for its two-year sponsorship deal, according to a company official. The other sponsors could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
The first game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon between teams from Kompong Cham and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation. Defense co-Minister Tea Banh is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony.
US tobacco giant Philip Morris, the manufacturer of Marlboro, had not yet decided whether to renew its three-year sponsorship contract when it expires this year, Sin Sok said. Marlboro distributors have said the decision will depend on Cambodia’s political climate.
