Voter Turnout Exceeded ’93, NEC Reports

Nearly 94 percent of Cambodia’s registered voters cast ballots in last month’s national election, with only 337,916 out of  nearly 5.4 million failing to appear, according to figures released by the National Election Committee.

A total of 5,057,679 registered voters took part in the poll—a turnout rate of 93.7 percent, the NEC said Thursday.

The figure beats the rate for the UN-sponsored election of 1993 when 84.3 percent of registered voters took part in the poll, the NEC reported.

The highest turnout was in Takeo province, where 96.8 percent of registered voters cast their votes, according to NEC figures.

Pailin came in last, with only 12,143 votes cast, a turnout of 77 percent. The former Khmer Rouge zone only became part of the government in 1996 and was taking part in the election for the first time.
