Teenager Charged With Rape of 7-Year-Old

The Kampot Provincial Court on Wednesday charged a 14-year-old boy with the rape of a 7-year-old girl at a mango plantation on Monday in Toek Chhou district, police said.

Lok Nhav, deputy chief of the provincial serious crimes bureau, said police arrested the teenager at the plantation on Tuesday after a complaint was filed by the victim’s family.

“Following the complaint filed by the victim’s mother at the provincial police station on Tuesday morning, we arrested the suspect at the mango plantation on Tuesday,” he said.

The girl’s mother told police that her daughter had gone to the plantation to join some other girls from her village, who were tending buffalo.

The suspect attacked her about 200 meters from her home, Mr. Nhav said, and tried to comfort her with a mango after the rape.

“The suspect promised to give her a mango if she didn’t tell her mother or another girl,” Mr. Nhav said.

When the girl finally returned home, she experienced pain urinating and decided to tell her mother, who informed the police.

After the boy was arrested and questioned at the provincial police station, he admitted to having raped the victim.

Mr. Nhav said the girl is being treated at the provincial hospital.

Mao Chanmathurith, the deputy provincial police chief, said that the suspect was brought to the provincial court to be charged Wednesday.

Rights group Adhoc has recorded 140 cases of child rape for the first 10 months of the year.
