Royal Railway on Sunday refuted a state media report that commercial passenger train service between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville was imminent.
On Friday, the state-run Agence Kampuchea Presse reported that regular passenger service to the coast would begin in early 2016.
It said that the railway had conducted a test run of the service on Friday with 150 people aboard.
However, Royal Railway CEO John Guiry said the report was wrong. “It wasn’t really a passenger train test,” he said.
“We’re not ready for that yet.” Mr. Guiry said the company has a train equipped for passengers and available for chartered use, and that local travel agents were invited aboard when it was taken out for a maintenance run on Friday.
Royal Railway hoped to offer commercial passenger service at some point, but such a service was not imminent, he said.
