O’Russei market vendors say they will protest today in front of the National Assembly after Phnom Penh municipality officials didn’t meet their demands.
The vendors met with Phnom Penh Governor Chea Sophara on Monday and told him that the rent is too high and the booths are too small. Rents will range from $1,900 to $3,300, with payments spread out over 20 years.
In a statement issued by the vendors on Thursday, they said they would first protest at the Assembly and if lawmakers do not resolve the problem, they will move on to the Senate.
Ngeth Chan Davy, director of the municipality’s finance department, said it’s difficult to meet the vendors’ requests because the rent has already been established and renovations for the market are almost finished.
If the 4,400 old vendors don’t agree with the municipality, Chea Sophara will offer the booths to other businesses, Ngeth Chan Davy said.
