Toyota group member’s Cambodian auto plant builds on African success

Toyota Tsusho takes on broad range of operations, from assembly to financing.

Toyota Tsusho began operations at an auto assembly plant here Thursday, looking to use a successful African strategy to capture demand in the developing Southeast Asian country of Cambodia.

“The start of assembly production marks a new milestone in the more than 30 years of Toyota Tsusho’s history in Cambodia,” said Ichiro Kashitani, president and CEO of Toyota Tsusho, in a news release on the opening ceremony.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet was also on hand. He praised the project for “contributing to the industrial development” of the country and called on the Japanese company to consider procuring parts from local suppliers.
