The Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) on Monday rejected the results of the national election, calling for a joint committee to be established to investigate what the opposition party said were vast irregularities in Sunday’s polls.
According to preliminary results released by the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) on Sunday night, the opposition party made unprecedented inroads into the ruling party’s parliamentary majority, gaining 55 seats to the CPP’s 68.
“The Cambodia National Rescue Party demands for the establishment of a joint-committee immediately to investigate and make a report about these irregularities,” the opposition party said in a statement issued Monday morning.
“This joint committee can consist of members from the Cambodia National Rescue Party, the Cambodian People’s Party, the National Election Committee, a representative from the United Nations and a representative from local and international civil society whose work is related to the election,” the statement added.
“This joint committee must investigate and make a final report no later than August 31, 2013.”
The official results have not yet been confirmed by the National Election Committee.
