Landmine Injures Three Villagers Hunting for Ants

Three villagers hunting for edible ants and wild vegetables were injured when one stepped on an anti-personnel mine in Banteay Meanchey province near the Poipet border crossing.

In the explosion, Cha Chay An, 28, injured her left leg and cut both her hands.

Also injured were her nephews, Pak Channay, 10, and his younger brother, Pak Channy, 8.

The woman’s husband took the three injured family members to a hospital in nearby Aranyaprathet, Thailand, for treatment, said Phea Chhlonh, Svay Chek district police chief in Banteay Meanchey province.

The Thai border area was the scene of some of the last battles in factional fighting during Cambodia’s protracted civil strife from 1979 to 1991.
