The National Assembly Legislation Committee Tuesday invited human rights groups and UN agencies to contribute ideas and suggestions to the draft law that would establish a trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders.
Monh Saphan, a member of Funcinpec and the chairman of the committee, said that all suggestions by the public would be “greatly welcomed” and considered during the debate when the committee meets to discuss the draft law Monday.
“We wrote to many human rights and civil society organizations to give us their own ideas, in a written way, around the tribunal draft to study and use those as the basis of our debate,” he said after the commission’s Tuesday meeting.
Committee members did not discuss the specifics of the draft plan Tuesday, he said. Instead, they agreed that each member of the committee would receive a copy and further time to study the plan and comments from concerned NGOs and members of the public.
Monh Saphan said critical comments on the draft would be “considered very thoroughly if they are good and legally responsible.”
Chea Vannath, director of the Center for Social Development, on Tuesday praised lawmakers for their stated willingness to listen to concerns from outside groups.
