Indian-owned WAPCOS Ltd. on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology as part of a $2.9 million grant to develop the Siem Reap basin and study groundwater resources in Kompong Speu province, officials said Thursday during the signing ceremony.
The grant was given to WAPCOS by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The plan for the Siem Reap basin includes studying the surface of the Siem Reap River to determine how much rain has fallen and where it flows to avoid flooding. It also includes constructing a drinking-water facility.
“After this study, we will build canals to prevent flooding and store water for use during the dry season,” said Bun Hean, secretary of state at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology.
In Kompong Speu, the plan is to study groundwater resources to supply water to people in two districts—Baset and Kong Pisei—which face water shortages during the dry and rainy seasons, said Mr. Hean.
