The government is on the verge of signing a multi-year contract worth at least $50 million with a Malaysian defense contractor to overhaul and maintain its fleet of T-55 tanks, according to Malaysian state news agency Bernama.
Amril Samsudin, the CEO of DRB Hicom Defense Technologies, told Bernama the five-year deal, worth between $50 million and $60 million, was in the works, speaking on the sidelines of a defense and security show in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
“We are finalizing a deal with the Cambodian government for a new maintenance, repair and overhaul [MRO] contract for T-55 tanks,” Mr. Amril was reported as saying.
“The project in Cambodia has a great potential judging from the size of its tanks for MRO services.”
General Nem Sowath, who joined Cambodia’s delegation to the defense show, referred questions to General Neang Phat, who declined to comment.
Major General Pov Sitha, commander of the Defense Ministry’s Tank Headquarters, said he knew nothing about the deal and declined to say how many T-55 tanks Cambodia had.
