ACU Tells Tax Collectors in Banteay Meanchey to Shape Up

The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has warned four tax officials in Banteay Meanchey province to do their jobs better or face legal action. The ACU posted the November 28 letters online, one to each official: the chief of Serei Saophoan City’s tax bureau and three of his collectors.

The letters accuse them of failing to fill out the necessary paperwork and not collecting enough money from local businesses, and orders them to report back on their work every three months for the next year.

“If the individual continues to commit wrongdoing by failing to carry out his duties, the Anti-Corruption Unit will take more measures according to legal procedure,” the letters add. ACU Vice President Chhay Savuth declined to say whether the tax officials were merely bad at their jobs or suspected of abusing their positions.

“They will be punished based on their actual mistakes, but we can’t say now because we haven’t gone to investigate at their workplace yet,” he said.

None of the four officials or their immediate superiors could be reached for comment.
