Constructing Lives

whats on women photos

There are just a few days left to catch a photography exhibition that gives a glimpse into the world of Phnom Penh’s female construction workers. “I Am Your Sister and I Am A Construction Worker,” which marks Inter- national Labor Day, is a project that saw six women workers of varying ages and backgrounds given smartphones by CARE Cambodia to document their work and home lives through images, videos and spoken stories. One worker, Uon Socheata, photographed her return to her home province to celebrate Khmer New Year with her son, whom she rarely sees as he lives with her grandparents. “Female construction workers are mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. They are so much more than faceless workers,” said CARE project manager Kalyan Rath. The exhibition is part of CARE’s wider Labor Rights for Female Construction Workers initiative to ensure safe and equal working environments.

Through May 7 at Meta House, #37 Sothearos Blvd. Free admission.
