Jailed Cambodian Opposition Activists Pardoned Ahead Of Polls

Nine Cambodian opposition activists jailed in mass trials last year received a royal pardon on Friday after they made public apologies.

Dozens of opponents of Prime Minister Hun Sen were jailed last year on charges ranging from treason to incitement and conspiracy over opposition leader Sam Rainsy’s failed bid to return to Cambodia in 2019.

The planned return by Sam Rainsy, who has lived in France since 2015 to avoid jail for convictions he says are politically motivated, was characterised by the government as a bid to overthrow Hun Sen.
