Cambodian advocates call for access to opposition leader’s trial

Cambodian civil society groups has called on a Phnom Penh court to allow access to the trial of the leader of the nation’s outlawed opposition party, after the first day of hearings excluded most journalists and public observers.

The world will be watching closely on the developments as Kem Sokha’s trial began on Wednesday, more than two years after the president of the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was arrested on widely criticized treason charges and accused of attempting to overthrow the government with US support.

Sokha again denied the charges as has the US.
