A Phnom Penh appeals court has upheld defamation convictions against a former Adelaide school teacher and ordered him to pay additional damages to the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) led by Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Son Chhay, a 66-year-old opposition politician, was convicted of criminal defamation in October and ordered to pay $A1.2 million in fines after criticising local district elections in June, prompting the CPP and the National Election Commission (NEC) to sue.
Judge Suos Sam Ath backed a lower court finding and increased damages to $A1.5 million saying Son Chhay was “laying blame and making false accusations against” the NEC and the CPP.
