ASEAN special envoy’s planned Myanmar trip aborted

Cambodia’s Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn will not make a planned third visit to Myanmar as ASEAN’s special envoy, a senior Cambodian official said Tuesday.

The Khmer Times reported that Cambodia’s term as ASEAN chair expires at the end of this month and Sokhonn is scheduled to attend a key summit in Brussels.

However, it quoted analysts as speculating that the trip will not be made because Myanmar’s ruling State Administration Council (SAC) has not shown progress in implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and recently sentenced seven university students, detained during a crackdown on dissent, to death.
