The next Cambodian government will be outsized

Hun Sen has bought support for son Hun Manet with promises of positions.

After almost four decades in power, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen is preparing to hand over leadership of his country to Hun Manet, his eldest son, but a vast cast of characters beyond the family has been pulled into the process.

Hun Sen has depicted his son’s elevation as based on his merits. Hun Manet, 44, and the younger cohort of politicians who are due to rise with him are educated and competent, the prime minister says, suggesting they will be able to base their authority on good governance and dedication to service.

They will replace a generation of leaders who derived legitimacy from overthrowing the genocidal Khmer Rouge in 1979.
