The head of the World Trade Organization was scheduled to arrive in Phnom Penh Monday to hold talks with Cambodian leaders about the country’s possible acceptance into the trade body.
Mike Moore, director-general for the WTO, is making a two-day visit to “show support of Cambodia’s entry into the WTO,” said Sok Siphana, secretary of state for the Ministry of Commerce.
Moore will meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen, National Assembly President Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Senate President Chea Sim.
Cambodia has been making progress toward joining the WTO, which would eliminate trade barriers with the other 144 member countries. Entry would mean an expanded market for Cambodian goods, but the government still needs to pass numerous laws that meet international standards before it can be a member.
