Woman Strung Up and Killed; Young Grandson Beaten

The battered corpse of a 40-year-old woman was found strung up by the neck on her property in Tbong Khmum province’s Ponhea Krek district on Sunday, local officials said Monday.

The victim, Rith Sovann, was last seen walking home after attending a party in her village in Kak commune on Saturday, according to second deputy commune chief Bun Phally.

The next morning, one of her relatives, wondering why her cows had not been put out to pasture, went to check on her and spotted the body of Rith Sovann’s 2-year-old grandson lying near his grandmother’s house.

“She felt quite nervous and then shouted and called her neighbors for help and they found the woman and immediately informed local authorities,” Mr. Phally said.

Authorities found the badly bruised body of Rith Sovann hanging by the neck from a rope tied to her well, he added. Her grandson, alive but unconscious, was taken to Kantha Bopha Hospital in Phnom Penh for treatment, according to the boy’s father, Mao Da.

Mr. Da said that as of Monday, his son had still not regained consciousness.
