Woman Smuggles Drugs Into Prison Inside Beans

A woman was arrested on Wednesday in Banteay Meanchey province for allegedly smuggling 12 methamphetamine pills into the provincial prison by slashing open green beans and tucking the pills inside, local police said Thursday.

According to provincial anti-drug police chief Thin Sindeth, the woman, Sem Rysa, 42, claimed that she had formed a relationship with an inmate over the telephone and that, at his request, had sent him the drug-filled beans on Wednesday morning by asking a taxi driver to deliver them to the prison.

“The woman confessed that she put 12 pills into the green beans and sent them by way of the taxi,” he said.

“The woman said she knew the prisoner through the telephone, but we do not believe her.”

Mr. Sindeth declined to name the prisoner who received the drugs, but said Ms. Rysa had sent him food via taxi in the past.

He said the 12 pills were detected during a routine check of prisoners’ shipments on Wednesday morning, adding that Ms. Rysa was questioned at the provincial court Thursday and would return for further questioning Thursday.
