Woman Shot Dead by Soldier Ex-Husband

A market vendor was shot dead by her ex-husband as she slept in her stall at Stung Treng City market on Saturday, according to police.

“Rasmey Sreikhuoch, 22, was shot five times and died in her hammock, creating chaos among other market vendors,” said Chhouk Komal, Stung Treng City police chief.

The gunman, who fled the scene and remains at large, has been identified by police as To Michel, 25, who was divorced from the victim, a clothes seller, in April last year, Mr. Komal said.

“The victim’s husband had been trying to become reconciled with her,” Mr. Komal said. “But she had rejected his advances up until he fired on her.”

The gunman, who used a handgun to commit his crime, is a Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) soldier in Kompong Cham province, and also works as driver for someone whose identity remains unclear, Mr. Komal added.

This is the second case of a soldier killing his wife in Stung Treng City in less than a year.

In August last year, an RCAF captain fatally shot his wife as she slept in a hammock before shooting himself in the head.
