Woman Injured After Grenade Placed in Fire

A 41-year-old woman was injured in a grenade explosion Wednesday morning in Kompong Chhnang province’s Kompong Tralach district, police said.

District police chief Hul Veasna said the victim, Ou Chan Thol, was burning trash near her house when she accidentally placed an old grenade in the fire too.

According to Mr. Veasna, the victim’s house is built on the site of a former army base and the land is still littered with unexploded remnants of war.

“When she was burning [the garbage] the grenade exploded,” Mr. Veasna said on Thursday, adding that Ms. Thol was lucky to have only suffered minor shrapnel wounds to her left leg.

A follow up search by the Cambodian Mine Action Center uncovered five more unexploded bombs near Ms. Thol’s house.
