Woman Found Strangled in Siem Reap Guesthouse

A 26-year-old woman was found strangled to death in a guesthouse in Siem Reap City on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

Maids at the Angkor Tip Guesthouse found the body of Phea Channy with bruising and swelling around the neck and a towel stuffed in her mouth at about 10:30 a.m., according to Siem Reap City police chief Tith Narong.

Mr. Narong said the woman had arrived at the guesthouse at about 8 a.m. with a man about 30 years old, whom police suspect was her boyfriend.

An hour after the pair entered the guesthouse, Mr. Narong said, witnesses said they saw the man leave in a rush and then hail a moto-taxi driver.

“The moto-taxi driver said that at 9 a.m. he took the man from the guesthouse in Slakram village to Banteay Chas village in Slakram commune for 3,000 riel,” Mr. Narong said. “The suspect is still at large.”

Nol Rung, deputy chief of the provincial bureau of serious crimes, said guesthouse employees and the victim’s family were questioned but led to no arrests.

The victim’s body has been sent to the provincial hospital for further examination, he said.
