Woman Charged With Trafficking Bride to China

A 52-year-old woman was charged with human trafficking by the Kompong Cham Provincial Court on Tuesday for allegedly convincing another woman to marry a Chinese man who then abused her, police said.

Me Siek Lim was arrested in her Tbong Khmum province home following a complaint from the family of the victim, Riel Thida, 31, who returned to Cambodia last week after a year in China.

“The victim said that the Chinese man attacked her every night, raped her, deprived her of nourishment and forced her to work overtime without sleep,” said Thai Vantha, Tbong Khmum provincial anti-human trafficking police chief.

The case was heard in Kompong Cham because a court is yet to be established in Tbong Khmum, which became a province earlier this year.

Ms. Thida went to China in August last year, she told police, after the suspect convinced her that she would marry a wealthy man.

Ms. Thida said Ms. Siek Lim gave $300 to her mother and assured her that there would be thousands more once she settled in China.
