Police in Kompong Thom and Kratie are seeking the killer of a 46-year-old woman whose body was found Sunday on the border between the two provinces.
Oung Moly, police chief of Sandan district in Kompong Thom, said that Sorm Mao was killed at around 9:30 am as she cooked rice in a small shack near a forested area. The woman and her husband had traveled to the area to pan for gold at a local lake.
The murderer stabbed the victim in the neck, then slit her throat. He made away with one chi of gold (about 3.75 grams) and the victim’s motorcycle. “This case was a murder for robbery, not revenge,” Mr Moly said.
“It was a cruel attack on the victim.” He said police were still investigating and had not yet identified a suspect.
Svay Sunary, deputy police chief of Sambo district in Kratie, said his officers were collaborating in the investigation. Sorm Mao’s husband, Sorm Suong, said he believed the killer knew his wife. “The suspect probably knows my family very well,” he said.
