Weather Warning Announced as Rainy Season Begins

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology issued a weather warning Monday, saying an approaching low-pressure system will this week kick the rainy season into full swing.

The warning says heavy rains are due to hit most of the country this week and that the tail of monsoon will affect the southeast of the country in particular.

“The public must be increasingly careful of the presence of thunder, lightning, and gusts of wind, which could cause serious impacts right through until July,” says the announcement signed by Water Resources Minster Lim Kean Hor.

“[We] appeal to ministries and relevant institutions to cooperate with provincial departments of water resources and meteorology and to farmers to find intelligent alternatives for cultivating rice during the rainy season,” it continues.

Heng Rothmonida, director of Kratie provincial department of water resources and meteorology, said authorities will broadcast warnings on radio and deliver the announcement directly to villages.

“We are telling people to pay attention to the weather warning and be especially careful of the dangers,” he said.

“We cannot prevent disaster, but we can take measures to prepare our people who face disaster.”
