Village Leader Accused Of Murdering Chief

The deputy chief of Trapaing Anchanh village appeared in the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday, accused of murdering the village’s chief in 2012.

Sar Rim, 39, who is also an assistant clerk in Trapaing Krasaing commune, was charged with the murder of 57-year-old Chan Sophal nearly one year after the alleged murder.

The charges came following a complaint from the victim’s wife, Srey Someur.

The court heard that Mr. Rim’s wife, Sar Chantha, had told Ms. Someur her husband had killed the victim.

Mr. Rim denied the allegations, saying he came across the victim’s body, which police said had facial and head injuries, in a canal next to a road and called for help.

The verdict will be handed down on July 28.
