A vigilante mob of villagers in Takeo province killed a man suspected of robbing a high school student’s motorbike at gunpoint.
The suspected thief’s accomplice was later arrested in a different commune in Bati district.
Villagers and farmers set on the victim, who went by the name De, after he and his partner Thol Panha, 25, allegedly robbed a motorbike outside a school in Kandal province’s Sa’ang district, said Ngan Sary, Bati district police chief.
Mr. Panha fled on the stolen bike while De took off on his own motorbike.
De fled to Takeo province’s Champei commune, where villagers who had joined the police in chasing down the suspect caught him and beat De to death with wooden sticks.
“We are very sorry that we couldn’t save his life,” said Sem Socheat, provincial penal police chief.
“We couldn’t arrest the mob because all the villagers fled the scene,” he added. Mr. Panha was caught and arrested by police in Kraing Thnong commune, Mr. Socheat said.
