Vietnamese Woman Sentenced for Pimping

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Wednesday sentenced a Vietnamese national to seven years in prison for prostituting girls aged between 13 and 16.

Nguyen Thi Kam Sieng, 23, was arrested by municipal anti-human trafficking police in December as she and one of the girls, who is also Vietnamese, arrived at the Lucky Star Hotel in Tuol Kok district.

The arrest was the culmination of a monthlong investigation.

Ms. Sieng claimed that she was simply bringing the girl for a meal at the Lucky Star but Keo Thea, chief of the municipal anti-trafficking police, said otherwise.

“She brought girls to sleep with customers when customers need girls,” he said.

Chea Nara, a lawyer for four of the girls, said they had agreed to meet men at the urging of Ms. Sieng.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court Judge Kor Vandy said aside from testimonies given by the victims, police had also seized used condoms that were presented as evidence against Ms. Sieng.

According to the government, condoms cannot be used in court as evidence of an illegal sexual transaction.
