Video Store Workers Suspected of Killing Boss

Two Phnom Penh video store employees are being sought for questioning in the stabbing death of their boss, police said.

The wife of Vang Anh Tong, 48, found his body in the bathroom of the couple’s Phsar Depot II commune coffee and video shop Sunday morning after he did not come home from work the night before, Tuol Kok district Police Chief Kim Horn said.

Police suspect two employees of the store turned on Vang Anh Tong and hacked him to death with a meat cleaver late Saturday or early Sunday, Kim Horn said.

The two men chased Vang Anh Tong around the compound and caught and killed the victim inside a bathroom, police said. Police recovered the handle of the meat cleaver in the bathroom near Vang Anh Tong’s body, Kim Horn said.

The next morning, Vang Anh Tong’s wife went to look for him. She found the gate locked and had to break it open, Kim Horn said. She found him in the bathtub.

Vang Anh Tong moved to Phnom Penh from Vietnam several years ago and opened a popular cafe near Wat Phnom, Kim Horn said. A few months ago, he and his wife opened the new shop where he was killed. Vang Anh Tong’s wife had hired two employees, both Cambodian men in their 20s, but no one in the family knew their names, Kim Horn said.

Since the killers did not take anything from the store, police believe the killing may have been partially the result of a misunderstanding, Kim Horn said.

Police have had trouble investigating the case because of the language barrier between police and Van Anh Tong’s family and friends, Kim Horn said.

No one was in custody Monday afternoon, Kim Horn said.
