US Senators Decry Clashes

Two senior US legislators have written Second Prime Minister Hun Sen to express their concern about violence following the July election.

“Bluntly, the violent repression of peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable to the international community and cannot continue,” US senators John McCain and John Kerry wrote in a letter dated Wednesday.

The two senior US lawmakers said they have “serious reservations” about the violence and intimidation that preceded and followed the poll.

They urged Hun Sen to hold the parties accountable for illegal activities, investigate the opposition parties’ complaints and engage in national reconciliation with the leaders from all political parties.

They senators wrote that as

nations consider the question of foreign aid and the status of Cambodia’s seat at the UN, “we will consider the actions of your government during the post-election period.”
