Five US Congressmen have requested the US seek a two-month delay of the July 26 elections at a Friends of Cambodia meeting next week.
In a June 11 letter to US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the five lawmakers said the conditions for free and fair elections are not in place.
“We request that…the United States call for the election to be postponed for at least two months in order to improve the conditions under which the elections will be held,” wrote the lawmakers, led by California Congressman Dana Rohrabacher.
The opposition National United Front has been trying in vain to influence the international community to push for a delay, saying that opposition parties must have access to broadcast media at least two months before the national election.
The next Friends of Cambodia meeting is scheduled for Saturday in Bangkok.
