US Citizens Organize Demonstration for Peace

Timed to take place on the one-year anniversary of the US invasion of Afghanistan, the “Not In Our Name” anti-war protest will be held Friday in Phnom Penh.

The rally was designed so US citizens can protest unilateral, preemptive US military actions and planning, including the seemingly imminent US attack in Iraq, said Larrie Warren, one of the rally’s organizers.

The “Not In Our Name” movement originated from a broader campaign in the US, Warren said.

“The response has been better than we had hoped, so we have drawn up a second protest document inclusive of non-US citizens,” Warren said.

The participants, “represent a broad range of political opinions, but there is a clear and common agreement against preemptive and unilateral war-making,” said Janet Ashby, another organizer.

The anniversary of the Afghanistan campaign is Oct 6, but the rally will be held on Friday in deference to the Pchum Ben holiday.

The rally will begin at 5:45 pm on the grass between the Chaktomuk High School and the Ministry of Education.
