US Basketball Pros to Visit Cambodia, Share Skills

To bolster interest in basketball in Cambodia, two professional players from the U.S. will arrive in Phnom Penh on Tuesday to spend a week sharing tips on technique and teamwork, the U.S. Embassy announced on Friday.

National Basketball Association (NBA) guard Wayne Ellington, who has played for six NBA teams, most recently the Brooklyn Nets, and former New York Liberty forward Sue Wicks will host a series of events during their trip from July 12 to 17.

They will help renovate the basketball court at Wat Koh High School in Phnom Penh on Thursday and host a special event with games and music at Olympic Stadium on Friday at 5 p.m.

According to U.S. Embassy spokesman Courtney Woods, the two pros “will visit local schools and community-based organizations to conduct basketball clinics and engage in public speaking activities.”

Future efforts to raise interest in the sport would be led by the Cambodia Basketball Federation and the country’s Olympic committee, who have partnered with the embassy to organize the trip, he said.
