Unlicensed Doctor Flees After Patient Dies in Kompong Thom

A doctor is on the run following the death of a young woman in Kompong Thom province, who died on Friday after receiving an injection from the doctor at an unlicensed clinic, police said Sunday.

Stong district police chief Yorng Sam said that Chum Leap had suffered from long-term heart disease and was taken to the clinic after complaining of pain.

“Seeing the situation was severe, the doctor gave the patient an injection and then took her to Stong district referral hospital, where she died,” he said, adding that the clinic in Kompong Chin Tbong commune, which had operated for less than a month, was now closed.

Mr. Sam said that the doctor, Aing Vitou, 29, had a medical degree, but declined to elaborate further.

“He has escaped because he feels afraid,” he said.

Ty Thiravuth, deputy director of the provincial health department, denied that Chum Leap died at the hospital.

“When she arrived, the doctor checked and saw she was already dead,” he said.

It remained unclear, however, whether the injection at the clinic had killed her, he said, adding that the case had been sent to the provincial court.
