Peter Leuprecht, special representative of the Secretary-General for Human Rights in Cambodia, will visit from Sunday to Nov 28 to discuss February’s commune elections, judicial reform and the right to education.
Leuprecht, who will stay in Phnom Penh for most of his visit, will be in Kampot from Nov 24 to Nov 26 to look into election fairness. Kampot was chosen at random, UN officials said. Leuprecht will meet with officials from the Sam Rainsy Party and Funcinpec to discuss accusations that the CPP has been using violence to intimidate candidates.
Leuprecht also intends to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen and officials from the Ministry of the Interior. When asked if he will discuss the recent trials of suspected members of the Cambodian Freedom Fighters or the plight of Montagnard refugees in eastern Cambodia, a UN official said the topics are not high on the agenda.
