UN experts want Cambodia’s journalism charter suspended

A group of United Nations independent experts have urged Cambodia to suspend its recently promulgated Charter for Professional Journalists saying it failed to meet with international human rights standards nor did it include relevant input from all relevant parties.

They noted the charter was promulgated by the information ministry on Aug. 6 after it was made public on July 24 and that no comprehensive consultations were held as part of the process and only a few stakeholders were given just nine days to comment.

“Just four days after the deadline, the Charter was promulgated without the possibility of further discussion on the inputs by relevant parties.” the experts said.
