U.N. human rights envoy Surya Subedi met with National Election Committee chairman Im Suosdey on Tuesday morning to discuss electoral reform and how he can assist in resolving the ongoing political deadlock between the ruling CPP and opposition CNRP.
Mr. Subedi has made a number of recommendations over the years that Cambodia overhaul its electoral system in order to ensure the fairness of the vote, most of which have not been acted upon.
“The process of reform is always a challenging one for any country and more so for a country like Cambodia, with its own complexities,” Mr. Subedi said following the meeting. “But again, I’m glad that many of my recommendations have now become a part of the national agenda.”
